The "Flash-to-Bang" Method
Light travels faster than sound. That's why you see the lightning flash before you hear the thunder.
The Rule: Sound travels roughly 1 kilometer in 3 seconds. By counting the seconds between the visual flash and the sound of thunder, you can measure the distance.
